The Harvard-Radcliffe Kendo Club Alumni Association (HRKCAA) was founded in the Fall of 2000 by a small group of Harvard College alumni who were members-in-good-standing of the Harvard-Radcliffe Kendo Club (HRKC) during their college years.
We currently enjoy the participation of Members and Friends from across the United States and all over the world.
The primary mission of the HRKCAA is to support the study and practice of kendo at Harvard College. To this end, the Alumni Association exists to guide and support the HRKC through oversight, instructional and financial support, and continued sponsorship of an exchange program with sensei and a Japanese University. The Alumni Association hopes to ensure that future generations of young Harvard men and women will have the opportunity to embark on the wonderful, life-long journey of self-improvement through kendo.
The secondary mission of the Alumni Association is to serve as a network and resource for its Students, Members and Friends, not only in kendo but in all walks of life. Being part of the Alumni Association ensures that members are not without a friendly contact should they find themselves in Europe, Asia, the Americas, or—most importantly—returning to the Cambridge area.
The HRKCAA continues to face the challenge of how to better support the Harvard-Radcliffe Kendo Club (HRKC). Primarily, the HRKCAA is developing a conduit through which Alumni and other donations to the HRKC can be made.
Additionally, the HRKCAA serves as a way through which Alumni of the HRKC can continue to pursue and develop their interest in kendo. For many of our members, the Association connects us to the very first dojo in which we started life as a kendoka. This connection not only maintains Alumni interest in kendo and in the HRKC, but also provides the HRKC with a sense of continuity and tradition, one which distinguishes it from all other martial arts organizations at Harvard College.
Without fail, every graduate of Harvard College and the HRKC, leaves university life with a common dream—to support the continued growth of Harvard-Radcliffe Kendo Club. This potentially includes building a kendo dojo along the banks of the Charles River.
If kendo has taught us anything, it is that we might only achieve this dream through hard work and perseverance.
